When ripe, the thick outer skin of a kiwano melon is bright orange and covered in small spiny projections or horns. The inner flesh consists of a gelatinous, lime-green or yellow substance that houses a multitude of edible seeds.
Though kiwano melon isn’t a fruit you’re likely to find in an average fruit basket, including it in your diet may be good for your health.
Rose apple is an exotic, bell-shaped fruit that grows across South and Southeast Asia.
It’s formally known as Syzygium jambos but informally also goes by jambu air, water apple, and Malabar plum.
When ripe, the thin, waxy skin of a rose apple ranges from pale green to pink or red. The inner flesh is crisp and watery, similar in texture to a pear or an underripe apple, with a light, floral fragrance reminiscent of rose water — hence the name. A cluster of loose seeds sits in a hollow at the fruit’s core.
